In June 2016, the Wichita Doula team gathered with other local doulas to take an At First Sight workshop to become Perinatal Belly Binding Specialists. We learned some incredible knowledge about this global practice that helps women feel secure, stable, and cared for after giving birth.

Why Do Women Love This?

You know how firm, hard, and taut your belly feels with your baby inside? Once your baby is born, that won't feel quite the same any more - many mothers report an uncomfortable "loose" sensation in their abdominal area after giving birth. Your uterus, pelvis, ligaments, muscles, and skin must all try to adjust after nine months of change. Diastasis recti is another common issue after giving birth.

How Does it Work?

Belly binding is done by using a special piece of cloth - usually sturdy, soft unbleached muslin - that is very long. Your specialist teaches you how to use a Malaysian wrapping and twisting technique that tightly and securely holds you together from ribcage to hips. Not only does it feel fantastic, but it can help you with your posture, help reduce back pain from breastfeeding, and give you the stability you need to do the exercises and stretches that will improve your core muscles.

Global Traditions

Most cultures have a variation of the lying-in period for postpartum mothers, typically lasting up to six weeks or more. During this time, the mother must rest, be fed nourishing food, and not be expected to do anything strenuous. In some cultures, particularly in a number of Asian countries, the observance of "warming" principles is an important part of a healthy postpartum. The mother's caregivers will cook her warm foods, keep her covered with warm blankets, and bring her warm drinks. Belly binding is often a key part of these traditions and is done in Malaysia, Taiwan, Tibet, Mexico, and many other places around the world.
