Race Issues and Wichita Doula

It's unfortunate that in 2016, it even needs to be said. I wish that it was assumed...just a given.

Wichita Doula does not in any way, shape, or form condone racism.

There is a lot of talking and debating going on right now regarding racial issues. It's easy to say “ugh, that's all I see in my news feed, I wish they would talk about something else.”

Well, at least for me as a white person, that's easy to say. It is from a privileged position as a white woman that I can “turn off racism.” I can hide, unfollow, and unfriend if I want to. I can smile and nod or ignore comments that I hear in person. People of color don't have that same option to tune out of racism because it is a part of their daily lives and there is no area of their world that its ugliness has not touched somehow, sometime. It's not right for people like me to try to ignore this and pretend it doesn't exist. So I'm saying something now.

We would like for our friends and clients who are people of color to know:

We see you and hear you. We love you.

We can't promise we will always get it right, we haven't walked in your shoes. We can't promise to always say the perfect thing at the perfect time.

But here's what we can promise you:

Our unconditional, non-judgmental support.

To always treat you with respect and dignity.

To keep listening and keep learning.

And to always strive to do better.
